Disney originally announced that the Disneyland Haunted Mansion would reopen as Haunted Mansion Holiday by August 23, 2024, the first day of the Disneyland Halloween season. The news came as part of a bigger set of announcements around Halloween. However, now Disney has shared that the attraction will be opening even sooner.

Disney has announced that the Haunted Mansion will be open even earlier beginning July 29, 2024, just before the opening of the Halloween season at Disneyland. Disneyland shared that when the Haunted Mansion Holiday returns, it will be available via virtual queue only when it first reopens as work on the outdoor queue continues. See everything you need to know about how to access the Haunted Mansion virtual queue here.

At this time we don't have information on if any of the attraction has been changed though there have been rumors about potential changes to the hitchhiking ghosts and the stretching room hanging scene. That second change wouldn't be seen until after the regular version of the attraction returns in January.

We will be watching closely to see if there are any changes when the ride reopens and will be there to test the virtual queue. The exterior work on the attraction is still in progress and not yet completed, which is why Disney was able to open the attraction so early.

We had previously mused that the Haunted Mansion could be open sooner than the start of the holidays. See our previous commentary below.

Though the news we learned is that the Haunted Mansion will for sure be open by August 23, 2024, it could be open even earlier than that. Disneyland has confirmed to us that this is not necessarily the official Haunted Mansion opening date and instead a guarantee that the ride will be open by the beginning of the Halloween season.

As we discuss in our Haunted Mansion closure guide, we can take this news as confirmation that the Haunted Mansion will not be returning first in its normal non-holiday version. We suspected this when the ride closed at the beginning of this year in January, as it was still set up as Haunted Mansion Holiday for the interior, and it wasn't going to make very much sense for Disneyland to reopen it in its normal version only to close it to turn it back into its holiday overlay very shortly after. This means that we won't see the regular version of the Haunted Mansion until early 2025.

Also, we have been observing the construction progress during our weekly updates at the park and not seen a ton of visible progress for the queue. Of course, there is undoubtedly a lot of progress we cannot see taking place, but Disneyland may have announced this to reassure visitors that the reopening date would not be pushed later into the year like we were beginning to think it would be. We can likely expect to see a pretty dramatic transformation of the grounds taking place within the next month.

We also would not be surprised if Disneyland aimed for a soft opening of the ride (in its holiday overlay) slightly earlier than the start of the Halloween celebration. They may be aiming to have it back in operation by early August for the weekend of the D23 Expo this year which will take place August 9-11. The 55th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion opening is on August 9th so this would also be a great time for the ride to open!

New Additions Coming to the Haunted Mansion

The new additions will build on the lore of the attraction, connecting to stories like the local legend of how the Haunted Mansion was first built by a prosperous sea captain. The expanded queue will feature new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota, and the one-eyed cat. The gardens will have unique elements like a water fountain, gazebo, and themed statuary and landscaping, as well as the greenhouse where the groundskeepers grow their plants. This will be added while retaining some of the most beloved aspects of the queue like the horse-drawn funeral hearse and pet cemetery.

There will also be a new retail shop added adjacent to the attraction's exit that will be inspired by Madame Leota. Disney previously shared that this is the “carriage house” of the mansion belonging to Madame Leota. Disneyland will also be improving accessibility during the construction and adding an elevator exit from the attraction for guests with disabilities.

The plaza adjacent to Tiana's Palace will also be getting some enhancements to transform it into an “elegant park-like setting” where guests can relax and enjoy live entertainment.
