The result is an international soccer tournament unlike any other because of the exceptions and caveats that are shoe-horned in at all angles.

The United States will play Canada, New Zealand and Panama in friendly matches in September and October. The U.S. faces Canada on Sept. 7 at Kansas City, Kansas, then meets New Zealand three days later at Cincinnati. The match against Panama is on Oct. 12 at Austin, Texas. All three games are on FIFA international dates, which means Europe-based players are available for selection. An additional match is possible to be added for the October window.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed head coach Chris Finch to a four-year contract extension coming off the franchise’s best finish in 20 seasons. Finch steered the Timberwolves to a 56-26 record in the regular season. That was their second-best ever. They reached the Western Conference finals and lost in five games to Dallas. The only other time the Wolves advanced past the first round of the playoffs was 2004. Finch has a .557 winning percentage over 3 1/2 seasons to make him the career Timberwolves leader. Finch and the late Flip Saunders are the only two Wolves coaches with 100-plus wins.

Kylian Mbappé has returned to France’s starting lineup for the match against Poland at the European Championship. The game on Tuesday comes eight days after he broke his nose. Mbappé is France’s captain. He will be wearing a protective mask for the Group D closer at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion. The Real Madrid-bound striker sustained the broken nose late in France’s 1-0 win over Austria on June 17 and was an unused substitute in the 0-0 draw with the Netherlands on Friday. Mbappé has since featured in a behind-closed-doors match against a local youth team.

A county legislature outside New York City has voted to to bar transgender female athletes from playing on girls’ and women’s teams at county-owned facilities after a bid to restrict trans athletes by executive order was thrown out in court. The Republican-controlled Nassau County Legislature voted 12-5 on Monday to bar trans athletes from playing at county-owned facilities unless they compete on teams matching the gender they were assigned at birth or on coed teams. The move followed Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s Feb. 22 executive order attempting to enact a similar ban.

Track officials have denied an appeal by 800-meter Olympic champion Athing Mu, who got tangled in a pack of runners and fell at the U.S. trials, denying her a chance to defend her title. Mu’s coach, Bobby Kersee, said Mu got clipped by another runner on the backstretch of the first lap, which caused her to veer to her left and tumble to the ground. USA Track and Field officials reviewed footage the race but eventually denied the appeal. They did not give details. Normally, protests are granted when there’s clear evidence of a runner obstructing another runner. Incidental contact is considered part of normal racing.

Spanish Vuelta champion Sepp Kuss has not sufficiently recovered from a COVID-19 infection and won’t take part in the Tour de France. The American was set to compete in a support role for Team Visma-Lease a Bike leader Jonas Vingegaard but fell ill during the Criterium Du Dauphine warmup race and is not fit enough. He has been replaced in the eight-man squad by Bart Lemmen. The absence of Kuss is a big setback for Vingegaard. The American, who won a Tour stage in 2021, is excellent in the mountains and would have been a key helper for the two-time reigning champion.

One-day races specialist Wout van Aert and former world champion Remco Evenepoel will lead the Belgium men's team in road cycling at the Paris Olympics. The Belgian federation says on Tuesday that both riders will compete in the individual trial and in the road race. They will be joined by Tiesj Benoot and Jasper Stuyven in the road race. Belgian champion Arnaud De Lie was selected as a reserve alongside Jasper Philipsen, Yves Lampaert and Tim Wellens. The women’s squad will be announced next month.

DETROIT (AP) — Bryce Harper homered, doubled twice, drove in five runs and helped turn a triple play as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Monday night.

The Boston Bruins traded 2023 Vezina Trophy winning goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators on Monday in exchange for the Senators’ 2024 first-round draft pick, forward Mark Kastelic and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo. As part of the transaction, the Senators will retain 25% of Korpisalo’s remaining salary. It answers a looming question the Bruins had about who they would have starting between the pipes next season. That will be 25-year-old Jeremy Swayman, who started 12 of 13 games this postseason after alternating with Ullmark during the regular season.

Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernández is ending his career with the club less than a month after lifting the Champions League trophy in London. Madrid announced Nacho’s decision about three weeks after the club defeated Borussia Dortmund at Wembley for the club’s record-extending 14th European Cup triumph. It was the sixth time Nacho won the Champions League with Madrid, and first as captain. He has won 26 trophies with Madrid, a record he shares with Luka Modric.

French club Reims has hired Luka Elsner as its new coach. The club announced the 41-year-old Slovenian’s arrival on X without immediately giving further details on Tuesday. Reims finished ninth in the top flight last season. Elsner kept Le Havre up having guided the club to promotion the previous season as second division champion. Reims was looking for a new coach after Will Still left with three games remaining last season.

Thousands of jubilant Afghans are celebrating their country’s most iconic sporting moment after their men's national cricket team reached the Twenty20 World Cup semifinals for the first time. Videos on social media show huge gatherings in different Afghan provinces after watching Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by a nervy eight runs in St. Lucia in the Caribbean. In the semifinals, Afghanistan will take on unbeaten South Africa in Tarouba, Trinidad on Wednesday night, Thursday morning for Afghans.

Jarren Duran drove in Ceddanne Rafaela with a ninth-inning single to help the Boston Red Sox cap a furious rally and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6. Rafael Devers and David Hamilton both added a two-run home runs for Boston, which has won 10 of its last 12 and is a season-high seven games over .500 at 43-36. Toronto’s seven-game losing streak is its longest since September 2019. Kenley Jansen (3-1) pitched a scoreless inning to get the win. Toronto appeared to be in control after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a towering three-run home run over the Green Monster in the seventh inning to put the Blue Jays in front 6-2.

Eight-time world rally champion Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais have been hospitalized after a crash in Poland while preparing for this week’s race. A police spokesman in Olsztyn, Tomasz Markowski, says two cars were involved in a crash near the northeast village of Wlosty on Tuesday. He says four people have been taken to hospital. TV footage shows an ambulance helicopter in a field and police and firefighters at the site. Ogier’s Toyota Gazoo Racing team says in a statement the French crew has been “involved in a road accident during reconnaissance for Rally Poland and have been taken for medical checks.”

Romania and Slovakia meet in the most finely balanced group at the European Championship. A draw on Wednesday would send both through to the round of 16. The game kicks off in Frankfurt at 6 p.m. local time (1600 GMT), at the same time as Belgium and Ukraine start in Stuttgart.

The NHL draft is later this week and there are a handful of Russian prospects who could be picked. There is always a higher risk with choosing a Russian player. NHL teams have no control over their prospect’s development and ice time in Russia and a pick could choose to stay home. Player agent Daniel Milstein and others brought the Russian players to a combine in Florida earlier this month so any NHL team could meet with them. The camp was held to dispel reservations over selecting Russians and boost their stock entering the draft this weekend.

Turkey needs a point from its final group match against the Czech Republic on Wednesday in Hamburg to be sure of reaching the knockout stage of the European Championship. The Czechs need a win and a favor from group-winner Portugal against Georgia in the other game at the same time. Turkey will be eliminated if it loses and Georgia beats Portugal. Georgia has a point from its draw with the Czechs.

Casey Eichfeld has qualified for the Olympics in canoe slalom, becoming the first American to qualify for four Olympics in slalom. He previously qualified in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He considered retirement after failing to qualify for the Tokyo games. Now 34, he seeks his first Olympic medal. His best Olympic finish was seventh in 2016. The United States has not won a gold medal in canoe slalom since the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, when Joe Jacobi and Scott Strausbaugh teamed for a canoe doubles victory.

Aleksander Barkov made some hockey history by becoming the first Stanley Cup-winning captain from Finland for leading the Florida Panthers to their first title in franchise history. Barkov is just the fifth European captain to hoist the Cup after Nicklas Lidstrom with Detroit in 2008, Zdeno Chara with Boston in 2011, Alex Ovechkin with Washington in 2018 and Gabriel Landeskog with Colorado in 2022. Roberto De Zerbi is poised to become Marseille’s new coach after the French league club announced it has reached an “agreement in principle.” De Zerbi, who left Brighton after two seasons in charge, led the Premier League club to its highest ever top-flight finish of sixth, then to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.
