NEW YORK (AP) — J.D. Davis was acquired by the Yankees from the Oakland Athletics along with cash on Sunday for minor league infielder Jordan Groshans as New York sought reinforcement after first baseman Anthony Rizzo broke a forearm and Giancarlo Stanton strained a hamstring.

Davis hit .232 with four homers and five RBIs in 135 plate appearances with the A's, who signed him to a $2.5 million contract in mid-March and designated him for assignment on Tuesday. Davis defeated San Francisco in arbitration and was awarded a $6.9 million salary as part of a non-guaranteed contract, then was released by the Giants and given $1,112,903 in termination pay.

Paris Games: Welcome to the weird world of men’s soccer at the Olympics

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

Welcome to the weird of world of men’s soccer at the Olympics. The world’s most popular sport occupies a strange space at the Games. It is confused by compromises and contortions that appear designed to ensure it remains a part of the roster so long as it provides the least possible disruption to teams, players and authorities that have priorities that lie elsewhere. The result is an international soccer tournament unlike any other because of the exceptions and caveats that are shoe-horned in at all angles.

T-wolves sign Finch to contract extension covering next 4 years, coming off conference finals trip

  • By DAVE CAMPBELL - AP Sports Writer

The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed head coach Chris Finch to a four-year contract extension coming off the franchise’s best finish in 20 seasons. Finch steered the Timberwolves to a 56-26 record in the regular season. That was their second-best ever. They reached the Western Conference finals and lost in five games to Dallas. The only other time the Wolves advanced past the first round of the playoffs was 2004. Finch has a .557 winning percentage over 3 1/2 seasons to make him the career Timberwolves leader. Finch and the late Flip Saunders are the only two Wolves coaches with 100-plus wins.

The move followed Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s Feb. 22 executive order attempting to enact a similar ban.

Olympic champion Athing Mu's appeal denied after tumble at US track trials

  • By EDDIE PELLS and PAT GRAHAM - AP Sports Writers

Track officials have denied an appeal by 800-meter Olympic champion Athing Mu, who got tangled in a pack of runners and fell at the U.S. trials, denying her a chance to defend her title. Mu’s coach, Bobby Kersee, said Mu got clipped by another runner on the backstretch of the first lap, which caused her to veer to her left and tumble to the ground. USA Track and Field officials reviewed footage the race but eventually denied the appeal. They did not give details. Normally, protests are granted when there’s clear evidence of a runner obstructing another runner. Incidental contact is considered part of normal racing.

Vuelta champ Sepp Kuss ruled out of Tour de France because of COVID-19

  • AP

Spanish Vuelta champion Sepp Kuss has not sufficiently recovered from a COVID-19 infection and won’t take part in the Tour de France. The American was set to compete in a support role for Team Visma-Lease a Bike leader Jonas Vingegaard but fell ill during the Criterium Du Dauphine warmup race and is not fit enough. He has been replaced in the eight-man squad by Bart Lemmen. The absence of Kuss is a big setback for Vingegaard. The American, who won a Tour stage in 2021, is excellent in the mountains and would have been a key helper for the two-time reigning champion.

Risk vs. reward as NHL teams assess Russian prospects at camp to dispel concerns entering draft

  • By JOHN WAWROW - AP Hockey Writer

The NHL draft is later this week and there are a handful of Russian prospects who could be picked. There is always a higher risk with choosing a Russian player. NHL teams have no control over their prospect’s development and ice time in Russia and a pick could choose to stay home. Player agent Daniel Milstein and others brought the Russian players to a combine in Florida earlier this month so any NHL team could meet with them. The camp was held to dispel reservations over selecting Russians and boost their stock entering the draft this weekend.

Panthers' Aleksander Barkov becomes the first Stanley Cup-winning captain from Finland

  • By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer

Aleksander Barkov made some hockey history by becoming the first Stanley Cup-winning captain from Finland for leading the Florida Panthers to their first title in franchise history. Barkov is just the fifth European captain to hoist the Cup after Nicklas Lidstrom with Detroit in 2008, Zdeno Chara with Boston in 2011, Alex Ovechkin with Washington in 2018 and Gabriel Landeskog with Colorado in 2022. His two-way play tying for the team lead in scoring while also shutting down opponents' top players made him a leading force on the Cup run.
